Space doesn’t belong to just one country. After all, it’s the International Space Station that Lego is about to sell you. India has been expanding its outer space ambitions recently, losing and then finding lunar landers as well as taking pictures of the moon. When it comes to stoking national pride, going to space catches a lot of eyes. And the nation’s next initiative is certainly eye-catching.
Meet Vyommitra, India’s new space robot.
The Indian Space Research Organisation eventually wants to send humans to space as part of the Gaganyaan mission. But before then they’re testing their techniques with Vyommitra, a humanoid robot that will take on a space mission later this year as reported by Times of India. Vyommitra, who looks like a friendly lady, speaks two languages and can manipulate things with her hands. She’s designed as an assistant for eventual Indian astronauts. However, she doesn’t have any legs, which limits her utility somewhat.
Still, even if manned ISRO space missions will have to take human legs into account, the Vyommitra prototype seems like a cool achievement. And as far as sci-fi robots go, we prefer a physical one we can destroy if it turns rogue as opposed to a formless A.I. Besides, as far as India’s space goals go, NASA is more concerned with space debris from exploded satellites rather than legless robot ladies.
