Electric eel Miguel Wattson loves to “shock” visitors at the Tennessee Aquarium by using his electrical pulses to light up a Christmas tree.
The program, which is called “Shocking around the Christmas Tree,” features a special system connected to Miguel’s tank that allows him to power Christmas tree lights. Miguel’s shocks act like an outlet to neighboring Christmas tree lights, causing them to glow bright at various times.
“Whenever Miguel discharges electricity, sensors in the water deliver the charge to a set of speakers,” explained Joey Turnipseed, the Aquarium’s audio visual production specialist. “The speakers convert the discharge into the sound you hear and the festively flashing lights.”
Older guests and children are enjoying the jolly eel, who loves to release blips of electricity whenever he’s hungry or in a good mood.
“The rapid, dim blinking of the lights is caused by the constant, low-voltage blips of electricity he releases when he’s trying to find food,” said aquarist Kimberly Hurt. “The bigger flashes are caused by the higher voltage shocks he emits when he’s eating or excited.”
ICYMI, here’s a video of yours truly attempting to use my discharges to power the lights on a Christmas tree. (SPOILER ALERT ::: Of course I pull it off. My phenomenal cosmic — well, bio-electric — power is basically limitless.) pic.twitter.com/g4r5JPHWoH
