Rumored Cheaper Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 At Least Fixes One Problem

It may not have been as dangerous as an exploding battery, but the Samsung Galaxy Fold was one of the biggest tech faceplants of the year. To be fair, you can only fall so dramatically by starting somewhere high. And the idea of a folding smartphone with no less than three separate displays was incredibly ambitious. That ambition was simply undone by numerous hardware issues that quickly rendered the pricey device unusable for critics and consumers alike.

After desperately pushing back the initial launch, the original Samsung Galaxy Fold did eventually release this September with various fixes and warnings to improve durability. For example, you’ll now know the outer screen layer is a vital component and not a trash piece of film. However, a new rumor suggests that not only is Samsung soldiering on with the foldable phone concept but they plan on fixing one of its most fundamental issues.

According to the Korean Herald (and reported by TechRadar) the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 could be here in a matter of months, possible debuting at Mobile World Congress 2020 in February.

Most intriguing though is the potential price point of the new phone. The original Galaxy Fold was essentially two phones in one with a $2,000 (or higher!) price tag that essentially cost as much as two phones in one. The high price made the device’s fragility even more alarming. However, this rumor claims the Galaxy Fold 2 would launch around the much more reasonable price point of $850, putting it in line with more conventional modern smartphones.

Unfortunately, the rumor doesn’t offer info on whether or not the device itself will stand up to more punishment. I would rather lose $850 over a broken phone instead of $2,000. But ideally the phone just shouldn’t break. And with competition increasing in the foldable phone space from handsets like the new Motorola Razr, Samsung needs something both affordable and trustworthy.
