Impossible Foods is taking vegetarian cuisine to the next level with its new product: A plant-based pork that’s made to look and taste like meat.
The company, which made headlines last year with its meat-free burger, recently introduced its pork at CES 2020.
Impossible Foods’ pork, which can be used to cook various dishes, including dumplings, stir-fry, and stuffed peppers, has the aesthetic of the real thing. It’s received mixed reactions from vegetarians and meat-eaters, who were divided on texture and taste.
Elizabeth Lopatto, deputy editor at The Verge, tried the meat substitute at CES and said it was “fine.”
“During Impossible Foods’ event, I tried out some Impossible Pork Banh Mi, Impossible Pork Char Siu Buns, Impossible Pork Dan Dan Noodles, Impossible Pork Katsu, and Impossible Pork Sweet, Sour and Numbing Meatballs,” Lopatto wrote in a review. “It was… fine? The fake meat was a little spongy; my favorites were the meatballs and the noodles.”

Brian Cooley, CNET’s editor-at-large, also sampled the plant-based pork and commented on its meat-like taste.
“There’s that nice resistance, chewiness, springiness that you want or expect from pork,” Cooley said in a video. “But not strong in terms of any kind of over-the-top pork flavor.”
Impossible Foods did not list a retail update on its plant-based pork yet, but it will be interesting to see what consumers think once it hits the market.
