No Time To Die doesn’t hit theaters until April. But you can listen to Billie Eilish’s haunting James Bond ballad right now.
Hear it for yourself!
Singer-songwriter Billie Eilish will perform the title track for the 25th James Bond film, No Time to Die.
The 18-year-old virtuoso, who wrote and recorded the song with brother Finneas O’Connell, is the youngest artist to record a 007 theme.
Initial reactions to the news of a green-haired teenager inducted into the Bond Hall of Fame—alongside greats like Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Louis Armstrong, and Tina Turner—have been, well, less than positive.
Others, meanwhile, went to bat for the singer.
Eilish boasts six Billboard Hot 100 top 40 singles, including “Bad Guy,” which became her first No. 1 in the U.S. (and still permeates global advertising).
She also has eight gold and four platinum singles in the U.S., two American Music Awards, two Guinness World Records, and three MTV Video Music Awards. Not to mention six Grammy nods (and the title of youngest artist ever nominated in the four main categories in the same year).
How many Twitter trolls can say the same?
“It feels crazy to be part of this in every way,” Eilish said in a statement tweeted by the official James Bond movie account. “To be able to score the theme song to a film that is part of such a legendary series is a huge honor.”
“James Bond is the coolest film franchise ever to exist,” she added. “I’m still in shock.”
The last two themes—Adele’s “Skyfall” and Sam Smith’s “Writing’s On the Wall” (from Spectre)—won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
“Writing the theme song for a Bond film is something we’ve been dreaming about doing our entire lives,” according to Finneas O’Connell, with whom Eilish created her debut album “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”
“There is no more iconic pairing of music and cinema than the likes of Goldfinger and Live and Let Die,” he continued. “We feel so so lucky to play a small role in such a legendary franchise. Long live 007.”
Details on the new song are scant: The Bond song is usually released in the month leading up to the film’s premiere, the BBC reported. No Time to Die hits theaters on April 2.
Hans Zimmer (Driving Miss Daisy, Thelma & Louise, The Lion King, Gladiator, Interstellar, Blade Runner 2049, and about 200 other films) will compose the film’s score.
The latest installment features Daniel Craig in his fifth and (supposedly) final outing as the titular MI6 agent; it is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective, Beasts of No Nation, Maniac), who co-wrote the screenplay with Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and the incomparable Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve).
Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Rory Kinnear, Léa Seydoux, Christoph Waltz, Ben Whishaw, and Jeffrey Wright reprise their roles, with Rami Malek, Lashana Lynch, Billy Magnussen, and Craig’s Knives Out co-star Ana de Armas joining the cast.
