Microsoft’s Surface Duo Spotted in the Wild in Canada

Just four months ago, Microsoft shook up the tech world when they revealed a pair of foldable, dual-screen devices. One was the Surface Duo, and it’s just been spotted in the wild.

The Duo is due to arrive some time later on this year. Microsoft hasn’t offered up a specific date so far, but based on a bit of video captured this week it looks like things are right on track.

Twitter user Israel Rodriguez happened to find himself in the presence of a Microsoft employee who — judging from the recording — was selected to test out a prototype. The quality of the video might not be the best, but you can clearly see the Surface Duo in action.

Unfortunately there’s not much in the video that shows off the Duo’s dual-screen UX — and nothing close to what Microsoft teased in the video from the official reveal. In case you missed it the first time around, you can find that clip on our previous post and see how the Duo handles multitasking or dual-screen-ready apps like Outlook.

Something else the video makes clear is that Microsoft still has plenty of work to do on the Surface Duo. That’s par for the course for a prototype device like the one spotted by Rodriguez in Vancouver. Touchscreen sensitivity, for example, seems to need a little tweaking. On more than one occasion in the video the user has to repeat taps or swipes before the Duo responds to the input.

One more detail that the video seems to confirm is that the Surface Duo won’t feature a traditional rear-facing camera. Because of the way the screen folds on its hinge you’ll definitely be able to flip a camera around to the back. When the clamshell is closed, however, it’s just two aluminum covers broken by nothing other than the Windows logo.
