Nikola Motors’ Badger Takes on Cybertruck With 600-Mile Range

Up until now most of the buzz in the electric truck world focused on Tesla’s Cybertruck or the Rivian R1T. Now a new challenger has entered the ring: the Badger from Nikola Motors.

Like the R1T, the Badger looks fairly similar to any extended-cab ICE pick-up you’d see on a dealer’s lot right now. Also like the R1T and Cybertruck, the Badger will outperform those trucks in a few different ways.

The Badger’s electric motors can produce 980 ft. lbs. of torque and 455 continuous HP. That puts it right in line with Ford’s 6.7L PowerStroke Diesel V8 — and the Badger still has more in the tank. It tops out at an awesome 906 HP.

Buyers will have their choice of two different powerplants. Nikola plans to offer the Badger as both a battery-only vehicle and a fuel-cell/battery hybrid. The BEV version will be able to squeeze 300 miles out of its cells. Nikola claims the fuel-cell will double the Badger’s range.

But where will you be able to fill up that fuel-cell? Nikola’s working on that. Hydrogen is a huge part of their trucking plans, and the company has set its sights on a nationwide network of 700-plus stations.

When you’re not going for distance, the five-seat Badger can haul plenty of cargo. It’s rated for towing loads up to 8,000 pounds and can yank 18,000 total pounds up a 30% grade from a dead stop.

The Badger is ready for just about anything a jobsite can throw its way. No access to plug-ins and the generator’s down? Not a problem. The Badger can stand in, supplying up to 12 hours of power via a 15-kilowatt outlet.

Everyone knows that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, and the Badger will have plenty to offer when the whistle blows at the end of the day. Nikola says it’ll lay down a 0 to 60 time of just 2.9 seconds. That’s more on par with a P85D in Ludicrous mode than the Cybertruck, which currently clocks in at around 6.5 seconds.
