Reuters Partners With Facebook For Fact-Checking Program

Reuters has joined Facebook’s fact-checking crusade.

As part of the social network’s third-party program, Reuters will comb through photos, videos, headlines, and other content—in the run-up to the U.S. election and beyond—to verify information in English and Spanish.

The global news provider will then publish its findings on a specially created blog.

“We are steadfastly recognizing the magnitude of misinformation taking place around the world. It’s a growing issue that impacts society daily and it’s a responsibility for news organizations and platforms to halt the spread of false news,” Jess April, director of global partnerships at Reuters, said in a statement.

“Reuters has a superior track record in sourcing, verifying, and clearing user-generated content for distribution to thousands of clients globally,” she continued. “And we are best placed in using our in-house expertise to fact check social media content.”

After helping to spread fake news online, Facebook introduced its third-party fact-checking program in 2017, making it available in 14 countries via organizations like the Agence France Presse (AFP), the Associated Press (AP), Factcheck.org, PolitiFact, Snopes, and The Weekly Standard.

Subsidiary Instagram, meanwhile, works with a number of certified fact-checking organizations to identify false information within its photo- and video-sharing app.

When content is rated “false” or “partly false” by an unbiased observer, it is removed from the Explore and hashtag pages and slapped with a “false information” label. Simply tap “See Post” to bypass the barrier, or click “See Why” for more information.

“Expanding our fact-checking program is an important part of our work to fight misinformation,” according to Facebook Integrity Partnerships’ Keren Goldshlager. “We are thrilled that Reuters is joining our U.S. partnership, and know we’ll benefit deeply from their expertise in visual verification and user-generated content.”
