‘Rogue One’ Disney+ Prequel Series to Film This Year

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Rogue One’s Diego Luna finally set a clear timeline for when we can expect the Disney+ prequel series about his character, Cassian Andor, to finally get under way. This comes over a year after it was announced, and shortly after news of a production delay on the Obi-Wan series.

“Yes, we are doing it,” he told reporter Jennifer Drysdale, whose questions seemed to point to the same tension we were all feeling about the show’s future. “We are doing it this year. It’s happening, and I’m getting ready for it.”

This would actually put the Cassian Andor show ahead of the Obi-Wan show in terms of production timeline, as Ewan McGregor recently told Variety that he doesn’t expect that show to begin production until early next year. Still, it seems like The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars will have to carry the Star Wars TV stable for now. 2022, however, seems like a great year for fans.

Luna told ET that he knows “very little” about the show as a whole, but has read some scripts. “I can’t wait. It is really cool to tell a story where you already know the ending.”

We’ve known since the show was announced that it would focus on the spy’s adventures during the formation of the Rebel Alliance, which is an especially exciting premise for adult fans. While the television show Star Wars: Rebels does explore the same time period, much of its storytelling and humor is aimed towards a younger audience. Being able to see the founding of the Rebels from an older perspective is exciting.

Bob Iger said in a recent investor call that the near future of Star Wars is on television, not film. As a Mandalorian fan with mixed feelings on the sequel trilogy, I’m glad to hear that that’s not just an empty promise.
