A system created by MIT researchers automatically updates factual inconsistencies in Wikipedia articles.
The text-generating AI pinpoints and replaces specific information in relevant sentences, an otherwise time-consuming task for individual editors.
And it does so without making the passage read like a robot wrote it.
The idea, as described in an MIT press release, is that humans type an unstructured sentence with updated information into an interface, unconcerned with style or grammar.
The program then searches Wikipedia, locates the appropriate page and outdated sentence, and rewrites it like a competent person would.
Researchers are already eyeing a fully automated system that identifies and uses information from the web to rewrite Wikipedia articles that reflect the most current facts.
“There are so many updates constantly needed to WIkipedia articles. It would be beneficial to automatically modify exact portions of the articles, with little to no human intervention,” lead study author Darsh Shah, a PhD student in MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), said in a statement.
“Instead of hundreds of people working on modifying each Wikipedia article, then you’ll only need a few, because the model is helping or doing it automatically,” he said. “That offers dramatic improvements in efficiency.”
Bots already exist to police Wiki edits—curbing vandalism or dropping specific information into predefined templates.
The MIT model, however, solves a “harder artificial intelligence problem”: Pass as a real human.
“The other [bot] tasks are more rule-based, while this is a task requiring reasoning over contradictory parts in two sentences and generating a coherent piece of text,” Shah said.
In a paper being presented at this month’s AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, the team used their neural network for other text-generating applications—including augmenting datasets to eliminate bias.
