Beginning with John Lasseter’s 1987 short “Red’s Dream,” Pixar films have included various references to the studio’s history and back catalogue.
The Pizza Planet delivery truck, for instance, makes an appearance in every Pixar feature film to date—with the exception of The Incredibles.
Spotting these Easter eggs is a favorite fan pastime. But only the most die-hard viewers can point out each (often very well-hidden) instance.
(Did you catch the billboard in Cars 3 advertising SleepWell motel from Toy Story of Terror? Don’t worry: No one else saw that threequel, either.)
On Monday, in celebration of the iconic studio’s 34th anniversary, Disney+ tweeted a video mashup of Easter eggs.
“The attention to detail here is INCREDIBLE,” the streaming service wrote in a cheeky reference to the fourth-best* Pixar film.
And they’re not wrong.
The two-and-a-half-minute clip starts with a close-up of a child’s Cars-themed shoes in Coco, transitions in reverse-chronological order from Finding Dory to A Bug’s Life, and ends with the seminal Pizza Planet truck.
I, a self-described Pixar megafan, admit to never noticing that shadow of Dug (Up) on a Parisian wall in Ratatouille, or the lifeless version of Doc Hudson (Cars) in the background of the Incredibles’ battle with Syndrome.
(That Lots-O’ Bear in the little girl’s bedroom in Up and Boo handing Sulley a Nemo toy, however, have not eluded me.)
Disney’s video is really just a small fraction of subsidiary Pixar’s self-referential nods, which include A113, John Ratzenberger, the Luxo Ball, Apple, and entire film franchises.
* Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and Monsters, Inc. are superior movies. Don’t @ me.
