We truly live in a society where a movie based on Joker, a clown who loves crime, is up for multiple Academy Awards the same weekend a spin-off about his jilted lover lands in theaters. But while Birds of Prey may not have “prestige” it does have Harley Quinn and a bunch of other DC antiheroines having a good, gory time in the Batman and Joker-free streets of Gotham City.
Watch these movies before Birds of Prey.
Suicide Squad
As far which early DCEU movie is worse it’s really a toss-up between Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad. What gives Suicide Squad a fighting chance is its handful of legitimately entertaining performances and that includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. They were smart to realize this take on this character was worth saving.
I, Tonya
If you want to see another Margot Robbie movie about a tragic, wronged, and potentially violent woman famous in the 1990s, check out his Oscar-worthy performance as infamous figure skating star Tonya Harding, co-starring the Winter Soldier himself Sebastian Stan.
Harley Quinn Cartoon
How about that synergy. Just as a new Harley Quinn live-action movie arrives in theater, we’re already several episodes into the Harley Quinn animated series, yet another shockingly excellent show on the DC Universe streaming service. Hilarious adult writing, an empathetic portrait of female strength and friendship, and plenty of deep DC lore make this one a winner.
Birds of Prey TV Show
Birds of Prey is DC’s catch-all name for dark superheroine teams. And in the early 2000s that included a short-lived live-action show about Oracle, Batman and Catwoman’s daughter Huntress, Black Canary’s daughter, and even Harley Quinn herself as the villain. This show even got a cameo shout-out in the Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Trainspotting
As Roman Sionis, Ewan McGregor brings cartoonishly sleazy gangster enemy to the Batman villain better known as Black Mask. His breakout black comedy role in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting, where he plays a burnt-out Scottish heroin addict, has some of that same energy.
Tyler Perry’s Temptation
I can (and have) write entire papers of academic film criticism detailing the precise ironic mindset needed to enjoy the melodramatic output on ubiquitous unscrupulous African-American filmmaking mogul Tyler Perry. But since we don’t have that much time I’ll just say that Temptation, starring Birds of Prey’s Jurnee Smollett-Bell, is definitely one of the “good” ones.
Do The Right Thing
Birds of Prey casts Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya and that’s so cool. She’s so cool! In case you forgot how cool Rosie Perez is check her out in Spike Lee’s seminal, incendiary, and still highly relevant look at New York race relations in Do The Right Thing.
