Netflix Is Making a ‘Witcher’ Anime

One of the things I really appreciate about The Witcher, going all the way back to its literary roots, is how it uses its specifically Eastern European flavor to separate itself from more generic fantasy. But you know well else can help your fantasy stand out? Pumping it up with a little anime action. And that’s exactly what Netflix plans to do with a new Witcher anime film.

As reported by io9, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is a spin-off anime film set on the same continent as the wildly popular streaming series, Netflix’s most popular series ever according to some shady metrics. The movie will be helmed by Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt, writer Beau DeMayo, and Korean animation house Studio Mir of the good-looking Legend of Korra seasons as well as Netflix’s own Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Netflix already knows its users love streaming anime, and they love watching The Witcher enough to demand for a detailed season timeline. So why not put them together. Heck, the Japanese version of “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher” (now on Spotify) is already a perfect anime opening theme.

With Witcher season two not coming until 2021, perhaps Nightmare of the Wolf could be used to bridge the gap. Work on the film apparently began even before the premiere of the first season. But animation takes time, so who knows. In the meantime, for more on The Witcher here’s everything you need to know about Geralt and the show’s two leading ladies Yennefer and Ciri. And here’s why we were so impressed by the Witcher 3 Nintendo Switch port.
