After hearing for years how it was the smartest and most important anime of all time, I finally watched all of Neon Genesis Evangelion after it hit Netflix with a new dub. And I liked it! The characters aren’t just sad but have compelling psychological depth. The action scenes are well-staged. The deconstruction of the mech genre is fascinating. The endings are pretty mind-bending. And the theme song, “Cruel Angel’s Thesis,” is a real banger.
The only thing that could make that song more beautiful is to hear is sung by a Black Gospel choir. So here you go!
And that’s really the post, fam. I’ve been nearly crying for months over how blessed this video is. What better time than Black History Month than to get some of those feelings down on (online) paper. I just love it so much.
One thing I really struggled with while learning Japanese was nailing pronunciation. So to hear these singers, the Glory Gospel Singers, simultaneously sound like a perfect anime opening and also exactly like some of my mom’s friends who sing at church just warms the soul like nothing else. It’s epic and emotional. Besides, Eva already has tons of Judeo-Christian themes. Just look at the name. So this pairing isn’t totally incongruous.
The Glory Gospel Singers are a New York-based group but they regularly tour around the world in places like Asia and Europe. If the bright lights and swooping cameras aren’t proof enough this video seems taken from some kind of Japanese game show. This isn’t the only anime theme in their repertoire. And they’re still active as of late 2019. Get them to sing the theme for the last Rebuild of Evangelion movie, Anno!
