Come on and slam, y’all. Space Jam 2 might not be coming to us until the summer of 2021, but the hype for the movie is officially underway.
The sequel to the 90s staple, which saw Michael Jordan team up with the Looney Tunes in a basketball game against a team of aliens who stole the talent of a bunch of NBA superstars (what a time the 90s were), officially wrapped filming late last year and sees basketball legend LeBron James step in as the new star around which the film will revolve. He’ll be joined by other superstars like Damian Lillard and Klay Thompson.

While the movie may be a ways off, Nike is officially starting to get the hype train going. Next month marks the annual NBA All-Star Weekend, a clash of superstars that also serves as the first major sneaker event of the year. This week Nike unveiled their full lineup of ASW sneaker drops and oh man, hope your wallets are ready to get dunked on.
Some of the more high-profile drops include retro Air Jordans but as far as we’re concerned, the biggest news is the release of the first sneaker in the Space Jam 2 roster. The original remains maybe the single most iconic sneaker movie of all time, so the pressure is on to live up to expectations in the sequel. The good news is that by the looks of it, we don’t need to worry.

On All-Star Weekend, Nike is dropping the LeBron 17 “Monstars” edition. The shoe seems to pay homage to the alien baddies of the first film (who may be returning in the sequel). The shoes are built from a purple and navy color scheme, with orange accents to really set the whole thing off. The shoe’s lower is comprised of a purple Air Max bubble while the upper is a pliable, durable flyknit weave. The tongue covers are different colors, orange and purple, and each features a large number zero (which presumably will have greater significance in the film).
Overall, it’s a mad colorful shoe that is sure to get people’s attention even devoid of the context of “movies in which basketball players team up with the Looney Tunes.” Maybe this will be the signature shoe adorned by the Monstars in the sequel, or maybe this is just a shoe made to commemorate the upcoming film. There’s no way to know for sure quite yet, but more news is sure to be coming soon (we’d expect a trailer sometime over the summer). It’s also likely not the last of the Space Jam 2 drops to be coming in 2020, so keep your eyes on Geek for updates on when more are hitting stores.

Additionally, Nike has revealed the jerseys the Tune Squad and the Monstars will be wearing in the film, making its imminent arrival feel all the more tangible. What a time to be alive.
In the meantime, download the Nike SNKRS app for information on when the shoes will go up for sale. These are sure to sell out, so keep your Reminders app updated.
