At first I was horrified by the live-action Pokemon of Detective Pikachu. But then that ended up being one of my favorite movies of the year. So maybe this CGI remake of Mewtwo Strikes Back (which has a relatively good plot) will be a similar surprise.
We’ll see for ourselves when it lands on Netflix next month.
2019 is set to be a real trip for Pokemon fans. We recently learned about Pokemon Sword and Shield, the next entries in the core RPG series. Normally a new generation is exciting enough on its own, but this is the first time the main series has appeared on a home console, the Nintendo Switch, so it has the potential to be an even greater leap for the franchise.
But even if you don’t keep up with the games you’re still about to experience Pokemon like never before. We also just saw a new reality-distorting trailer for Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, the Ryan Reynolds comedy where Pikachu wears a detective hat and curses at other disturbingly realistic Pokemon in a live-action world.
And now we’ve just seen yet another trailer for a new type of terrifying Pokemon film. It’s only March! Check out this teaser for Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution.

As its name implies, Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution is a remake of the original Mewtwo Strikes Back, the very first Pokemon film released 20 years ago. But now instead of the hand-drawn look of the anime, this new movie features the first CGI take on the familiar Pokemon film franchise. While CGI Pokemon are pretty common because of the games, it’s pretty wild seeing Ash and Brock and Misty as these action figure-like 3D models instead of their traditional 2D selves.
Still, of all the Pokemon movies to get remade we’re glad it’s this one, still our favorite Pokemon movie. Whenever Pokemon begins to interrogate its own borderline dog fighting premise just a little bit it’s really great. This is why Pokemon Black and White, and its Pokemon-freeing antagonists, are the best games. And it’s why Mewtwo Strikes Back’s message of “fighting your own people is really tragic actually” still hits home.
Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution releases in Japanese theaters in July. Hopefully it comes over to America, too. That’s two CGI Mewtwo we can expect to see in theaters this summer.
