What will it take for you to give your precious streaming dollars to HBO Max instead of Netflix or Disney? Is The Big Bang Theory bazinga enough for you? How about the exquisite anime stylings of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli? Does another season of Doom Patrol do anything for you? Are you cool enough for a reboot of The Boondocks?
The streaming revolution is creating a veritable gold rush of content. And now you can add Adventure Time to the pile according to a report on Deadline.
Adventure Time is one of the most acclaimed and influential cartoons of the modern era. It wrapped up a ten-season run on Cartoon Network back in 2018. But since Cartoon Network is owned by WarnerMedia, Adventure Time is getting conscripted into the streaming wars to fight on behalf of the parent company. You’re welcome.
A series of hour-long specials, Adventure Time: Distant Lands, are coming to HBO Max starting in 2020. Each of the four specials seem to follow a specific beloved character or pair of characters, starting with robot BMO, moving onto Marceline and Princess Bubblegum, checking in on Peppermint Butler in a wizard school, and finally coming full circle with original heroes Finn the human and Jake the dog.
However, while Adventure Time is back, it doesn’t sound like original creator Pendleton Ward has returned for Distant Lands. Ward took a break from the series and didn’t even work on the final season. But considering how well-received the finale was, the current creative time seems up to the challenge.
