Of all the cultural forces contributing to our current cyberpunk dystopia, the gig economy has got to be one of the biggest and worst offenders. Bosses are super pumped about their workforce made up entirely contractors with no benefits. But that’s pretty bad news for the rest of us. It’s going to take a lot to change this, from government regulation to mass labor movements. In the meantime the absolute least you can do is tip your Uber driver for crying out loud.
Unfortunately, according to a study from the National Bureau of Economic Research (and reported by The Verge), the vast majority of us are falling below that low bar. The paper includes dismal stats like 60 percent of Uber customers never tip and only one percent always tip.
There are other interesting bits of data as well Highly rated riders tip more as do riders who match with the same driver. Drivers get more tips on the weekend and during early morning hours. Men tip more often but women tip higher amounts. And older riders are pretty consistent.
But the biggest takeaway is that the riders are just cheap. The average tip is between three dollars and fifty cents. Or rather, riders have just been successfully and unfortunately conditioned to believe that Uber drivers for whatever reason just don’t need tips the way regular taxi drivers do.
That’s not true at all but Uber doesn’t want you to know that. It took them years to even allow for tipping in the app in the first place. And now it’s definitely the least seamless part of the overall payment process. So stick it to the man and help your fellow worker by doing the right thing and tipping your Uber driver.
For more on Uber remember the brutal round of layoffs they pulled just a few days ago? Make yourself feel better by taking your pet with you on your next ride.
