Last month everyone couldn’t help but notice that we’ve officially caught up with the timeline of Ridley Scott’s dark sci-fi classic Blade Runner. While the November 2019 of today may look a little different from a future of Harrison Ford killing replicants, they’re both equally dystopian in their own ways. Now we just need to wait and see if the real 2049 resembles Blade Runner 2049… if we even survive as a species for that long.
In the meantime, we can now finally enjoy a piece of digital Blade Runner entertainment previously thought lost to history. GOG has resurrected the Blade Runner PC game.
Originally released in 1997, Blade Runner got a point-and-click adventure game adaptation for PC, and it’s considered a strong example of the genre. After all, there’s not much difference between the logical, fixated scrutiny of a Voight-Kampff test and your standard adventure game puzzle. The new characters and primitive 3D elements add extra interests for fans of the franchise or the genre.
Unfortunately, after its first release the game became somewhat lost after developer Westwood Studios misplaced the source code during a move. Westwood’s acquisition and destruction by EA probably didn’t help either.
The good news is that some of our brightest online minds have finished eight years of work reverse engineering the game through the ScummVM adventure game preservation engine. And thanks to current Blade Runner license holders Alcon Interactive, you can now purchase the game on GOG totally DRM-free. It reminds of us GOG’s earlier deal to bring back the original Diablo.
