Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker had its Hollywood premiere Monday night, ahead of its release later this week. And while official reviews are under embargo until Wednesday, that hasn’t stopped attendees from sharing their initial responses on Twitter. While cast and crew members like J.J. Abrams, Mark Hamill, and Daisy Ridley joined the audience, so did various members of the press, who were seeing the film for the first time at the premiere, as Disney refused to send out press screeners or hold special press showings to protect against spoilers.
Without posting any direct spoilers, journalists seem polarized on the movie, with some saying it’s a lot to take in, regardless of your opinion:
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has everything you want and more.
Which I don’t necessarily think is a good thing.
I loved parts, I didn’t love others, and I’m leaving the theater very, very conflicted about it. pic.twitter.com/dOYAP6Ntbi

#TheRiseOfSkywalker is ummmmmm a lot! tons to love here, no shortage of crowd pleasing moments and twists and cameos, but also quite a bit to 🤔. some faves: jannah 💜, d-0 💚, finn of course 🖤. and what a lovely send off for our general leia 💕🚀💫

While others are noting, for good or ill, its swerve away from the style seen in The Last Jedi:
It’s amazing. #lastjedi haters will be very pleased. #RiseOfSkywalker

RISE OF SKYWALKER could only have been ruder to Rian Johnson if they had motion-smoothed it
— Kyle Buchanan (@kylebuchanan) December 17, 2019
And yet more are split on the amount of fan service the new approach delivers:
When people talk about #StarWars , they talk about their childhoods. Their best memories. The people they loved and shared it with.#TheRiseOfSkywalker brings back all those feelings. And then some.
I absolutely loved it.
And now I feel … pic.twitter.com/5wkQh6v97G
— Anthony Breznican (@Breznican) December 17, 2019
So, I’m not too surprised and at times I felt too much fan service was given, but #TheRiseofSkywalker is everything and nothing that you’re expecting.
So I guess what my immediate reaction is: God I love this franchise and I’ll miss the Skywalker saga.

There is good in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. But there is more that is disappointing. There are a number of choices that just don’t track, fan service that doesn’t work, and ignored details that are missed. I’m bummed. #StarWarsRiseofSkywalker pic.twitter.com/Ztk0VzGc6H

Some like the new direction, but are questioning if the movie is packed enough that its new plot should have been sprinkled more evenly across the sequel trilogy:
#TheRiseofSkywalker is a lot. It’s like 9 movies of plot in one. Going to take me about 9 days to process.
— Chris Taylor (@FutureBoy) December 17, 2019
STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is certainly the most convoluted Star Wars. There is a lot I liked, but the first half gets so bogged down with exposition and new plot and doodads and beacons and transmitters, it feels like it should have been three movies on its own.
— Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) December 17, 2019
While others just straight up approve:
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is everything I wanted it to be — because there’s never been a STAR WARS movie like this before.
It’s dark and scary, but hopeful and beautiful.
It ends the trilogy while also ending the saga as a whole.
I know I’m rambling — but I worship this movie. pic.twitter.com/XoJFl8Rv8n

All I’ll say about #RiseofSkywalker is that I cried 3x … which seems fitting for the end of the 3rd trilogy to which I’ve devoted so much of my time 😢😢😢 It was everything and nothing that I expected. Thank you @jjabrams 🤩 #starwars pic.twitter.com/JntmkuXuRE
— Angelique Jackson (@angelique814) December 17, 2019
And, to maintain balance:
At worst, I expected #TheRiseOfSkywalker to be a well made movie that I didn’t like or whose story choices I disagreed with. I was not expecting a genuinely bad movie with video game plotting, thin characters, weak action and endless exposition of no consequence. Heartbreaking…

Star Wars: Justice League, not the cut you want.

Most important, to me, are the totally real, 100% genuine Baby Yoda leaks:
This scene, I would totally love to see in #RiseofSkywalker! @EthanVanSciver 😂😂🤣🤣 pic.twitter.com/FwGFWhL2Uz

@MsDarthBarbie you’d be on it like sonic 😎 #RiseofSkywalker pic.twitter.com/w6d5ExWyj1

And the also completely real, totally true new take on the classic “Luke drinks blue milk” scene from the last movie:
Tweeting through tears – #TheRiseofSkywalker isn’t the best Star Wars film, but it is the ULTIMATE Star Wars film. A truly stunning finale to a nine film saga. Only weird thing was the amount of screen time spent on characters wolfing down raw vidalia onions. I ADORED this movie.
— ben mekler (@benmekler) December 17, 2019
C-3PO was never my favorite Star Wars character but he OWNS #TheRiseOfSkywalker. From his antics with R2 to his surprising buddy cop dynamic with Poe to his captivating monologue about never truly knowing the flavor and mouthfeel of a sweet vidalia onion, this is 3PO’s movie

Maybe we’ll be next…

In my research for this article, I came across a number of supposed leaks, and fan reactions to them. They’re there if you want to find them. But already stirring, the pot is. Whatever your take, discourse this week is gonna be taking place at lightspeed:
Just walked out of #TheRiseOfSkywalker and I can say without reservation that it is a nightmare. Buckle up y’all, this week is going to be……….ugh pic.twitter.com/VAy5RF3qHh
