Toy Tuesday: The Best ‘Rise Of Skywalker’ Toys

It’s kind of insane to think that the Star Wars saga as George Lucas originally envisioned it will be… done after the release of The Rise Of Skywalker this week. Yeah, we know we’ve got The Mandalorian and lots of other books, comics, video games and more – and additional movies will probably start back up again, don’t fool yourself – but it still feels sort of final. With every new flick, though, comes new toys. We took some time to preview the Rise of Skywalker toys, and here are our picks.

LEGO Kylo Ren's Shuttle

LEGO Kylo Ren’s Shuttle

Star Wars has been one of the most dependable licenses for LEGO since 2008, and the galaxy’s funky, ad-hoc technology is a perfect fit for the building system. Rise of Skywalker brings us a bunch of new kits, but the coolest is probably this massive minifig-scale take on Kylo Ren’s black shuttle. Clocking in at over a thousand pieces, this jet-black juggernaut features wings that fold up and out, an opening cockpit with room for three minifigures and a pair of blasters that really work. Throw in five minifigs including Kylo Ren with lightsaber, General Pryde, and two of Kylo’s Knights of Ren and you have a kit that will bring the First Order home in style.

Vintage Collection Rey

Vintage Collection Rey

If there’s one decision that they made in The Last Jedi that we hope sticks, it’s making Rey not the daughter of somebody famous in the Star Wars universe. Taking the Force away from a lineage of Important Heroes and making it a free-flowing natural resource that chooses hosts at random (don’t even say the word midichlorians to us) is way more interesting and fun. We’ll see what the third installment does for our lightsaber-swinging heroine soon enough, but until then this classic cool figure, packaged on the iconic cardboard backing and plastic bubble, will look great on your toy shelf.

Zorii Bliss Funko Pop

Zorii Bliss Funko Pop

Even though it’s the last film in the nonology, Rise of Skywalker is still introducing new characters to the universe. Played by Keri Russell, Zorii Bliss is a character from out of Poe Dameron’s past who now leads the Spice Runners of Kijimi, staying fastidiously neutral between the Resistance and the First Order. Allegedly human, we have to say that her helmet is definitely giving us Mandalorian vibes, although we doubt that’s the case. We’d expect her Funko Pop to go quick, so hop on board now before she becomes the next Boba Fett. Or the next Jar-Jar Binks, who can say?

Star Wars Ultimate D/O Interactive Droid

D-O Bluetooth Interactive Droid

A new Star Wars means new droids, and Lucasfilm has been outdoing themselves movie after movie to make the mechanized life of the galaxy cute and toyetic. The latest is the D-O unit, which allegedly tags along with BB-8 in the new movie. Made out of scrap parts by droidsmith Babu Frik, he rolls along on his wheel and attempts to make himself useful to the best of his abilities. Controlled by Bluetooth, this motorized replica can chase a ball, move its head, and make multiple sound effects. The self-balancing wheel technology in there is very impressive.

Black Series Sith Jet Trooper Figure

Black Series Sith Jet Trooper Figure

Who would have thought that all it would take to transform Stormtroopers from ineffectual to badass would be a coat of paint? The red-clad Sith Troopers are the elite forces of the First Order, allegedly capable of tapping into some fraction of the Force’s dark side to make their combat skills even more impressive. This exceptional Black Series figure has all of the articulation that you’d expect from the series, with tons of arm and leg joints and a blaster rifle.

Poe Dameron's X-Wing

Poe Dameron’s X-Wing

Another guy that needs a comeback from The Last Jedi is pilot Poe Dameron, who started the sequels as one of the most decorated pilots in the Resistance and ended up getting a squadron killed on a mission to take out a First Order dreadnought. Hopefully the third movie will give him a chance to redeem himself. For the flick, Hasbro is releasing a new build of his iconic X-wing fighter, which many fans are hailing as the best toy take on the space fighter to date. You can even slot in your choice of astromech droids, from BB-8 to an old-school R2 unit.

Black Series Jannah Figure

Black Series Jannah Figure

Another new character to the franchise, Naomi Ackie plays Jannah in Rise of Skywalker. According to what little we know, she’s the leader of a group of resistance fighters that our crew allies with in the course of their adventure, and she gets around on horseback. Her Black Series figure positions Jannah as somebody who’s not to be goofed around with, as she’s sporting a host of weapons including something that looks like a longbow variant on a classic Wookiee bowcaster. You know what to expect from the Black Series by now – brilliant sculpts, tight detailing and tons of articulation.

Bandai Hobby Kylo Ren Model

Bandai Hobby Kylo Ren Model

Model kits are a classic geek pastime, testing the limits of hand-eye coordination and precise movement. Bandai, one of the biggest names in the industry, has dropped a new selection of really sweet plastic models for Rise of Skywalker. The Kylo Ren model might be the most screen-accurate take on the character we’ve seen yet, with some wickedly cool sculptural details. One thing that’s very cool about Bandai’s new model kits is that they boast a much higher level of articulation than you’ve seen in the past – these things can move and flex almost like commercial action figures, and Kylo Ren comes with multiple interchangeable hands and his trademark lightsaber.

Galaxy Of Adventures Finn Figure

Galaxy Of Adventures Finn Figure

We’re definitely curious as to what the end of ex-stormtrooper Finn’s arc is going to be. Is it really that easy to walk away from the First Order and everything you’ve ever known? And how do you compete when everybody around you is above average and you’re a former piece of white-clad cannon fodder? If we had to put money on it, we’d bet on Finn getting a big deal scene in the final movie that delivers a potent payoff. The Galaxy of Adventures figures are a little cleaner and more animated looking than some other lines, but they still have tons of articulation and some fun accessories.

LEGO Resistance Y-Wing

LEGO Resistance Y-Wing

After the Empire fell and the First Order took its place, the Rebellion also underwent a name change, for reasons that remain unclear. Surely “rebellion” would have still been a valid nomenclature, and did they really have to give their ships a new paint job? Whatever the case may be, it gave our favorite toymakers the opportunity to kick out some new stuff. LEGO’s take on the Y-wing, a reliable craft that has seen action as far back as the Clone Wars, does justice to the dual-function nature of the ship, at home in dogfights as it is on bombing runs. Comes with a couple minifigs, including Poe Dameron, and Zorii Bliss.

Walk 'N Roar Chewbacca

Walk ‘N Roar Chewbacca

Las Vegas betting odds are pretty good that Chewbacca might not make his way out of The Rise Of Skywalker alive, which would be a bummer, but with his best friend already passed away the Wookie’s journey might come to an end. Remember all the good times you had with the snarling Wookie across seven films with this walking, noise-making homunculus. Give the foot-tall Chewie a squeeze and he’ll amble across the floor and release several sound effects taken straight from the movies.
