You’ll probably never make it to outer space. But an item of your choosing can.
For a price.
Jeff Bezos’s aerospace company Blue Origin partnered with Charitybuzz to offer one lucky (and deep-pocketed) bidder the “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to send a special item into orbit.
The object—a photo of a loved one, a piece of art, your favorite T-shirt—will launch aboard the Blue Origin New Shepard space shuttle and spend 11 minutes in flight before returning to Earth and making its way back to you via post.
With barely more than a day left to make an offer, you’ll have to collect every cent of loose change in an effort to outbid the current top entry of $8,290. The next minimum bid is $8,790.
(Considering the estimated value of sending a material item into space is a whopping $25,000, $9,000 is actually quite a reasonable price.)
An auction win comes with certain caveats, though.
The victor, according to Charitybuzz, must sign an NDA to participate; ensure their payload weighs no more than 1.1 pounds, adheres to Blue Origin’s limitations (no hazards, etc.), and can fit inside a 4-by-4-by-8-inch box; and pay to have it shipped to Texas at least two weeks ahead of the planned flight.
If their package fails to arrive at the launch site in time, the person forfeits their opportunity and will be subject to a 25 percent “reschedule” fee.
The winner will also be required to sign a contract with SPACE on Ryder Farm, a New York-based nonprofit residency program and organic farm (which has three other live lots, including tickets to see “Jagged Little Pill” or “Oklahoma!” on Broadway).
Blue Origin recently completed a record-breaking test flight of its New Shepard suborbital spacecraft.
