One of the wildest turning points in gaming history has to be when Nintendo suddenly called off its partnership with Sony in favor of the Philips CD-i debacle. Instead of developing a CD add-on for the Super Nintendo, Sony created its own disc-based console. And for the past 25 years the PlayStation has been one of the most enduring brands in gaming, surely humbling Nintendo in the process.
It all came so close to being so different though. How close. Prototypes were made of the hypothetical Nintendo PlayStation. A few years ago, the last one of those prototypes was found and later restored. And this February you can bid on this unreal retro device yourself.
As reported by Kotaku, this February the Nintendo PlayStation will hit the Heritage Auction service. These are the same folks that sold off a rare Kid Icarus cartridge for nearly ten thousand dollars. But whereas that’s a game you can still easily play today, the Nintendo PlayStation is a true one-of-a-kind artifact when it comes to gaming history. So expect the open auction to wind up with a much higher dollar amount.
At least, that’s what current owner Terry Diebold hopes. In talking with Kotaku, Diebold says that after years of bringing the device on tours and conventions, passing up previous hefty offers north of a million dollars, he’s finally ready to part with the device and actually make some money for him and his son who found it in the first place.
So if you’ve got pockets and passion deep enough to take home a fascinating vestigial tail of a gaming hardware world that might have been, try your luck at the Nintendo PlayStation auction in February 2020.
