Even as The Rise of Skywalker lags in sales and The Mandalorian wraps up its first season, this weekend nonetheless saw an explosion of Star Wars memes hit social media, some fueled by celebrities and others powered by the fanbase. Let’s go through them one by one.
Starting us off is a cute interaction between Adam Sandler and Billy Dee Williams. While Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems may have been snubbed by the Academy this year, it didn’t pass by Star Wars’ Billy Dee Willaims unnoticed. This Saturday, Williams tweeted an uncanny comparison between Lando Calrissian’s costume design in The Rise of Skywalker (inspired more by Donald Glover’s Solo outfit than Empire Strikes Back) and Sandler’s costume design in Uncut Gems.

Sandler took the tweet in good humor, asking Billy Dee who wouldn’t want to be him.

It’s a cute nod between two very different actors, but fits for more than just the similar costumes, as both pictured characters are known for being underworld kings. Which, of course, has lead to fans playing off the interaction with clever edits.

In spicier news, John Boyega doubled down on his feelings towards certain parts of the Reylo fanbase this Saturday, when he posted a slick edit of him dancing, slapping, lightsaber…ing, and going super saiyan on his haters to his Instagram.
This comes after he jokingly called out the ship’s toxicity in a New Year’s Eve tweet that unfortunately kicked off a harassment campaign seeking to get him to apologize. Clearly done for laughs, this original tweet seems directed more at The Rise of Skywalker’s script than the idea of the couple itself, but that unfortunately hasn’t stopped users from claiming he posted it out of some jealous personal crush on Daisy Ridley (Boyega isn’t Finn in real life, folks), or sending racist accusations towards the actor, some of which can be seen in his video.

While some are criticizing Boyega’s video response to the hate for not censoring the social media handles of the users in his video, others are loving the takedown, while arguing that everything shown in it was originally shared in public anyway.
Reylos: publicly tag John Boyega in posts in which they berate him, insult, slander him, and say racist and obscene shit about him to his face.

It’s no doubt a slick edit, showing a savvy understanding of social media on the actor’s part (It starts out with TF2’s Engineer saying “nope,†for instance), and in my opinion, it’s refreshing to see Boyega assert his individuality and indifference to fan hate rather than cowtow to a fanbase that feels like it holds some ownership over him because of one contract he took when he was in his early 20s. Finn’s character arc unfortunately never sees a clear conclusion in the sequel trilogy, despite starting off with a strong premise, so it’s more than fair to see Boyega vent after being promised a major role. “Unprofessionalism†goes two ways, and this isn’t the first time we’ve seen actors jokingly call out their own films.
Robert Pattinson (bless him) has spent over a decade openly mocking the romance in his completed popular film series, & yet he has never faced 1/5 of the targeted fan vitriol & accusations of attacking fans as has John Boyega after like a month. I wonder why that could beeeeeeee

Finally, let’s step away from celebrities and end with something entirely of the fans’ own creation.
Who are they? (Wrong answers only) pic.twitter.com/fIwZMCP9KO

On January 8, Twitter user @Lunwi88 posted the above edit of a lineup of force ghosts, including Luke Skywalker, Anakin Skywalker, Yoda, Mace Windu, and other famous deceased Jedi from Star Wars, and asked users to identify who they were, with the catch that they could only post wrong answers.
The results are a pretty good jab at the, well, LARP-iness of the shot and its characters, as well as its lack of diversity. Yes, person typing an angry comment, I am aware that there is a green muppet and one person of color in the shot, and no, that is not the rebuttal you think it is. Anyway, here are some of our favorite answers:

Even with some help from celebs, it’s impressive to see Star Wars conversation not dying down even as the series hits a lull in new releases. Before we leave, here’s a bonus meme of Geralt fighting dudes with a lightsaber. Because if he can be in Monster Hunter, Netflix, and Soul Calibur, why not Star Wars?
