The Switch is an amazing portable gaming system and it’s been a massive hit for Nintendo. Dells’s latest Alienware system aims to bring a similar experience to PC gamers.
Before you get too worked up, know this: for now, the Alienware UFO is purely a concept device. Still, there’s plenty here to get excited about. The crew over at PCMag were lucky enough to spend some hands-on time with the UFO, and here’s what they learned.
The UFO sports an 8-inch display and very Switch-like controller config. The controllers are slightly different, though. The left side (with a d-pad and analog stick) and right (with a second stick and ABXY buttons) don’t work independently for two-player gaming on the go the way the Switch Joy-Con do.
What they can do is slide into a dock to form a single wireless controller. That lets you prop the UFO up on its integrated kickstand and game without having to hang on to the entire system. At least that’s the plan: Dell didn’t have the wireless functionality ready to go in time for PCMag to test it out.
There’s also no dedicated dock like the Switch’s, but it doesn’t need one. The UFO is a full-on Windows PC. It’s not like the Razer Junglecat bringing Switch-like functionality to mobile games. If you want to play your games on a bigger display you can simply plug one in to the tablet’s USB Type-C port.
Dell wasn’t willing to disclose what kind of hardware the UFO is running, which is logical enough given that it’s still a prototype. They’re clearly very confident in the system’s abilities, however, saying that it’s more powerful than many of the gaming laptops that are currently available.
What we get to see in PCMag’s video is certainly impressive. What would be even more impressive is if Dell actually commits to bringing the UFO to market. They were willing to roll the dice on the Steam Machine, so fingers crossed!
