I like Pokemon Sword and Shield a lot. It made it onto my top ten list of 2019’s games. But it wasn’t perfect. As much as the folks whining about the cut Pokedex were chuds, they did sort of have a point about the weird limitations and lack of polish for the first console entry of a hugely profitable and beloved series. One of the worst trends of modern gaming is publishers realizing they could put out only semi-finished games and then pad them out afterwards with DLC. And it’s a shame to see Nintendo fall into this same trap.
But I’m not going to lie, this Expansion Pass for Pokemon Sword and Shield seems pretty hype!
This Pokemon Direct actually had an announcement for a brand new Pokemon game. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, the weird roguelike series where you play as a talking Pokemon going on adventures with other Pokemon, returns as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. And it’s coming this March.
Honestly though, it’s hard to be that excited for that spin-off when Pokemon Sword and Shield are getting the most substantial add-ons by far for a new Pokemon game. Thankfully, instead of doing the third version grift, the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass will add new areas and new Pokemon for $30. The two episodes, Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra, launch this summer and fall, respectively.
The new regions are both open-world Wild Areas, a great direction for the series to move in, and feature new characters and new storylines. But most exciting to skeptics should be the return of over 200 legacy Pokemon along with two new legendary Pokemon, fighting bear Kubfu and psychic/grass-type Calyrex. Even if you don’t buy the expansion, you’ll be able to trade these returning monsters through the Pokemon Home service this February.
Does this fix everything wrong with Sword and Shield? Unless the DLC somehow revamps all the graphics then no. And I’m not a fan of what really does feel like rushing the base game and then finishing it later. But again, I can’t even front, I’m ready to return to Galar in 2020.
