The Brookfield Zoo and greater Chicago community are mourning the loss of Isis, a 14-year-old lioness who suddenly passed away on Tuesday.
Late Monday, Brookfield Zoo staff found Isis lying on the floor of a moat, after she apparently fell and hurt herself. According to staff reports, Isis’ death was “sudden” and she wasn’t having any health or medical issues prior to the tragic incident.
We are grieving the loss of our female African lion Isis. Her death comes less than 2 weeks after the loss of her mate Zenda. Monday, Isis was observed laying on the floor of her moat injured. Earlier this month, Isis’ mate, Zenda, was euthanized after he had difficulty standing and walking. The zoo announced his death on Jan. 3 and less than two weeks after, Isis tragically passed away as well.
It’s unclear what caused Isis to fall and the Chicago Zoological Society, along with the Brookfield Zoo staff, are looking into the devastating occurrence.
