A fisherman’s “catch of the day” turned out to be a 350-pound Warsaw grouper and it’s going viral on social media.
The man reeled in the massive fish off the coast of Florida on Dec. 29, 2019. Fish and Wildlife Research Institute marine biologists believe that the aquatic creature could be 50 years old.
A photo of the Warsaw grouper was shared on Instagram by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. According to the caption, the fish was caught by hook-and-line in approximately 600 feet of water.
The Warsaw grouper was reportedly the oldest sample collected for the FWC aging program. Researchers collected samples of its otolith, a calcium area located behind the fish’s brain that could provide clues about its age.
According to the FWC, the Warsaw grouper is known for its elongated second dorsal spine. Adults typically swim in depths of 180 to 1,700 feet, however, juveniles may be spotted around shallow-water reefs and jetties in the northern Gulf.
The FWC doesn’t encourage targeting of this fish, since its population status is unclear.
