House of the Dragon, HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series, will likely hit HBO in 2022, according to industry reports.
HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys sat down with Deadline at TCA to discuss the upcoming show, which focuses on House Targaryen.
“My guess is sometime in 2022,” Bloys said at TCA. “They are starting writing.”
Bloys declined to comment on additional details, but it would be interesting to see if House of the Dragon will debut in two years or have an earlier premiere date.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon takes place 300 years before the Game of Thrones series plot. It dives into the rich history of Daenerys Targaryen’s family and their power struggles with other monarchs. Martin even teased that there will be dragons, too, throughout the series.

There is no casting information available yet, but Bloys emphasized how House of the Dragon will be first priority among other Game of Thrones spinoffs.
“For me for right now, I think getting House of the Dragon on the air will be the number one priority. There are no other blinking green lights or anything like that,” Bloys added. “Sometime down the road who knows, but there are no immediate plans. We are all focusing on House of the Dragon.”
