Wanted: A female partner to join Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa on a journey to the Moon.
The 44-year-old entrepreneur was revealed in September 2018 as the first private citizen to travel beyond low-Earth orbit.
“Ever since I was a kid, I have loved the Moon,” Maezawa, founder of online fashion mall Zozotown, said in 2018. “Just staring at the Moon fueled my imagination.”
But the 22nd richest person in Japan doesn’t like to be alone.
Maezawa plans to assemble a band of virtuosos (painters, photographers, musicians, film directors, fashion designers, architects) to accompany him—and one lucky lady—to see the Moon “up close.”
And what better way to find that special someone than on a reality TV dating show?
The art/antiques/supercar/wine collector, worth an estimated $2 billion, will capture his journey to true love in “Full Moon Lovers,” a “serious matchmaking documentary” from Japanese video streaming site AbemaTV.
Are you a single woman aged 20 or older, with a bright, positive personality, the desire to live life to the fullest, a wish for world peace, and an interest in going to space (as well as the ability to properly prepare for it)?
Apply online by Jan. 17 for your chance to romantically partner with Yusaku Maezawa.
“As feelings of loneliness and emptiness slowly begin to surge upon me, there’s one thing that I think about: Continuing to love one woman,” he said in a message posted to the show’s website. “I want to find a ‘life partner.’ With that future partner of mine, I want to shout our love and world peace from outer space.”
The selection process begins later this month, with the first matchmaking dates expected in mid-February. A final decision will be made by the end of March.
Sure, this outlandish idea is sexist, exclusionist, and just plain creepy. But it’s not Maezawa’s first silly scheme: In 2019, he broke Twitter’s retweet record by promising to give 100 million yen to 100 social media users who followed and retweeted him.
Turns out money can buy you love.
