They say good things come to those who wait. That’s definitely true for anyone who was tricked by Hyperkin back on April Fool’s Day 2017.
That was the year they teased the RetroN Jr., a tiny 3-in-1 system that they wanted you to believe could play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and GBA games. It couldn’t, of course, because it was just a cruel joke.
At least it was until today. Like scores of other gadget makers, Hyperkin is showing off new and upcoming products at CES in Las Vegas. One of them just happens to be the RetroN Jr. In fairness to Hyperkin, they did tell us in 2017 that there was “no release window just yet” and that we should “stay tuned.”
Apart from the color scheme, it looks very similar to what they posted on Twitter three years ago. Instead of going with a Game Boy-like palette Hyperkin opted for black and gold.
The real deal has vertically stacked power and reset buttons on the front. They sit directly above a single USB-A port, which our chums at IGN believe might be used to hook up a wired controller (they’re currently undecided between wireless and wired). On the left-hand side there’s a headphone jack and a dial for adjusting the output volume.
Turn the RetroN Jr. around and you’ll find the video outputs: one HDMI and a set of composites. Power is supplied via a USB Type-C port and Hyperkin is even integrating an old-school Game Boy Link connector. They’re not making any promises yet, but that seems like a good indicator that they’re hoping to be able to pull off head-to-head gaming.
Boot the console up and you’ll be able to enjoy all your favorite classics in crisp 720p resolution. Hyperkin uses the word “stunning,” which, given the RetroN Jr.’s April Fool’s roots, we’re definitely hoping is more than just a gag. Take that, Analogue.
