Despite its reputation among certain fans, now that its follow-up has hit theaters and had some time for the dust to settle, Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi is currently coming out on top among the Star Wars sequel trilogy, at least as far as Metacritic’s critic score is concerned. Holding a score of 85, 4 points above The Force Awakens and a whopping 31 points over The Rise of Skywalker, some fans are now considering whether the film’s director, Rian Johnson, should return to the series to pick up where he left off. Although Metacritic is not a perfect metric, it’s also worth noting that both Looper and Knives Out, films Johnson made before and after Star Wars, also hold similarly high ratings.
While rumors have gone back and forth over the past few weeks over the likelihood of more Rian Johnson Star Wars down the line, with fans and outlets debating over whether a previously announced Johnson trilogy is still in the works given how Disney has responded to Last Jedi backlash, a new interview with Variety has given us fresh insight from the director himself.
Speaking with the outlet this Monday about Knives Out’s Oscar nomination, Rian Johnson said he was “blown away, man.” He then specified that “We just set out to make a fun movie that audiences could enjoy,” and spoke a bit about how Daniel Craig’s tight shooting schedule forced the team to be economical about their time.
While hinting that he’s considering, but not settled on a Knives Out sequel, Johnson also told Variety about his future with Star Wars, confirming that he might not be done with the galaxy far, far away yet. “I’m still talking to Lucasfilm but they haven’t announced anything on their Slate yet.”
This comes after a question asking if Johnson was in active development on a Star Wars project, making the coy response even juicier. Unfortunately, it seems like we might have to wait for Lucasfilm to find out what exactly is going on. However, the language Johnson is employing here sounds a little too much like a boilerplate NDA response to not hold at least a little bit of hope that the filmmaker currently has another contract with the studio.
In the meantime, check out our retrospective on Johnson’s filmography.
