A visitor suffered severe burns after falling into thermal water at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming on Sunday night, according to National Park Service officials.

Cade Edmond Siemers told park rangers that he walked off the boardwalk without a flashlight and tripped into a hot spring near the cone of Old Faithful, CNN reported. Seimers, who was badly injured from the incident, was able to get back to the Old Faithful Inn and call for help around 12 a.m. local time.

Seimers was sent in an ambulance to the West Yellowstone Airport and then flown to Idaho Falls, where he was treated for burns at Eastern Idaho Region Medical Center. As of Monday, Seimers was in critical condition and not available to comment on the Old Faithful situation, hospital spokeswoman Coleen Niemann told CNN.

Authorities believe Seimers may have been drinking on Sunday night. They discovered a beer can near Old Faithful, along with one of Seimers’ shoes and footprints right near the geyser. The National Park Service is investigating if any damage was done to Old Faithful during the incident.

The National Park Service has warned visitors about Old Faithful and why it’s important to stay on the boardwalks at all times. The ground in Yellowstone’s hydrothermal areas is thin and scalding water is right below the surface, which could cause life-threatening burns to those that trespass them.
