Aracde1Up’s Online ‘NBA Jam’ Cabinet Is on Fire

Arcade cabinets have been making a slow yet steady comeback as nifty boutique machines for retro video game fans. This past E3 had a shocking amount of original arcade machines. And Arcade1Up is one of our current favorite makers of affordable new cabinets, scoring killer licenses for classic Namco, Star Wars, Mortal Kombat, and Marvel games. We even have some of these machines around the office for pop-off tournaments.

At CES 2020 Arcade1Up showed off its next nostalgic quarter-munching revival, the king of arcade sports games NBA Jam. And the old star player is getting some new tech tricks.

To be honest I’m already sold on the initial pitch. A four-player cabinet featuring NBA Jam, NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, and NBA Hang Time? That’s all the high-flying, death-defying, backboard-burning basketball game action I need. I only wish I could play the supersized version of the cabinet on display at the show.

But that’s not all Arcade1Up is offering. This NBA Jam cabinet will be the first from the company to offer online play. Connected to your home Wi-Fi network you can play against up to three other players online balling on their own cabinets. 90s nostalgia with 2020s convenience. For years various ports of arcade classic have used online multiplayer as a selling point, expanding the local social experience of the arcade worldwide. But actually playing this way on a cabinet sounds pretty cool.
