An Australian family is mourning the loss of their cat after it was eaten by a giant python on Sunday.

Stuart McKenzie, a snake catcher based on the Sunshine Coast, was called to help a woman who discovered the massive reptile in her backyard. The python, which was about 6.6 feet in length, had a bulging belly from a recent meal, which turned out to be the woman’s beloved feline.

“I took the snake to the local vet and we scanned for a microchip and sure enough it was a family’s pet cat. The owner of the cat was contacted by the vet and she called me afterwards and we had a good chat,” McKenzie wrote in a Facebook post. “She was obviously very sad and her kids were devastated.”

On the day of the incident, the cat was reportedly exploring the neighborhood, even though it was kept indoors at night. McKenzie warned the public about letting their pets outdoors, especially since they can kill other animals or become prey themselves.

“Please please please if you are a cat owner I beg you not to let your cat explore the neighborhood during the day or night,” McKenzie added. “Not only do cats predatory instincts take over and they kill lots of native wildlife but they can also be killed by native wildlife or run over by cars.”
