Everything That Folds at CES 2020

Samsung had a lot to show off at CES 2020, from helper robot balls to rotating TVs to invisible mobile keyboards. But in-between all the promising news for the future they also snuck in a tidbit about the embarrassing recent past.

Last year’s Samsung Galaxy Fold is absolutely the kind of device that would make a big splash at CES, only to fall apart when the concept runs up against reality. The ambitious and expensive folding phone had so many immediate fatal flaws that its initial launch was scrapped and pushed back for months. And although initial reports claimed Samsung sold a million Fold units, at CES we learned the real number may be half of that or even lower.

Still, tech companies aren’t giving up on the fancy dream of foldable screens just yet. Just ask Motorola. Here’s everything else that folds at CES 2020.

TCL Foldable Phone

TCL has been showing off foldable phone concepts for a while, perhaps recognizing that an idea like this shouldn’t be rushed. This year’s prototype features a clamshell design with four back cameras and just one large 7.2-inch inner display. The color scheme is certainly stylish, but early reports were unimpressed with performance, the screen crease, and physically holding the device.

Dell Ori

The Dell Ori concept makes the argument that perhaps foldables are more suited for tablets than phones. It’s like a big digital book. When oriented like a laptop the bottom screen can also become a virtual keyboard, with enough space to actually make that comfortable.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold

While most foldables at CES are still concepts, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold promises to be the world’s first foldable Windows 10 PC when it actually launches later this year for $2,500. It’s a real product with real specs like a 13.3-inch 2K pOLED display with no crease, five-megapixel IR camera, virtual and physical keyboards, 11-hour battery, and Intel UHD Gen 11 Graphics card.

Intel Horseshoe Bend

I’ve always been a fan of big, desktop-replacement laptops. I can’t remember the last laptop I had smaller than 17-inches. So maybe the Intel Horseshoe Bend is the foldable for me. Its two 12-inch displays become a massive 17.3-inch tablet when unfolded. And it’s powered by Intel’s upcoming Tiger Lake processors.

LG Rollable TV

Last year LG already wowed us with rollable OLED TVs, unfurling when you’re ready to watch and folding back up when not in use. Rolling, folding, close enough. They didn’t hit their launch target of late 2019. But now the world’s first rollable TV is on track for a mid-2020 release date for $60,000.

Ivanka Trump

CES 2020’s collective spine folded when they allowed complicit fascist fail-daughter and not even a tech person Ivanka Trump to deliver an ultimately boring keynote about “The Future of Work.”
