Many celebrities, including Joaquin Phoenix, addressed climate change at the 77th annual Golden Globes on Sunday, where they called out man-made environmental issues.
The Joker star, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, said Hollywood “has to take responsibility” when it comes to protecting the planet.
Even though Phoenix slammed some Hollywood climate activists for using private jets, he also pledged to “do better” and continue fighting climate change.
“It’s great to vote but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives and hope that we can do that,” Phoenix said at the ceremony. “We don’t have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the award sometimes, or back. Please. And I’ll try to do better and I hope you will, too.”
Other actors, including Russell Crowe, also spoke out against climate change on the big night. Crowe unfortunately missed the Golden Globes due to the bushfire crisis in Australia, however, he delivered a powerful message to attendees and viewers.
Thanks to the @goldenglobes .
What a cast I got to work with.
Naomi Watts, @WallisAnnabelle Sienna Miller, Aleksa Palladino @JoshStamberg @SethMacFarlane Simon McBurney and everybody else. They created a complete world. Their commitment, sensitivity and courage was inspiring. pic.twitter.com/AW9PtKwKF3— Russell Crowe (@russellcrowe) January 6, 2020
“Make no mistake. The tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based,” Crowe said in his statement. “We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is.”
