These Are the Games You Should Check Out in January 2020

If you were looking for January’s video game releases to bring in the new decade with a roar, you’re going to feel disappointed. While this is a new decade, this month’s offerings are in line with previous years’ less-than-stellar releases. That isn’t to say there aren’t some good titles to pick up. There certainly are. But don’t come in expecting any huge blockbusters. Consider this the calm before the proverbial storm that will hit next month.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Release date: January 17

We’ve had countless Dragon Ball Z games where you get to relive iconic moments from the long-running anime. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot takes things further by truly letting you live the life of Goku. While combat is a critical component of Kakarot, players can also partake in other activities like training, fishing, eating, and making friends. If you’ve ever wanted to become Goku, here’s your chance.

You can pre-order Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot on Amazon.

Journey to the Savage Planet

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Release date: January 28

You can consider Journey to the Savage Planet a low-calorie alternative to The Outer Worlds. Like Obsidian’s game, Journey to the Savage Planet takes players to mysterious and exotic alien worlds. Though players will certainly engage in combat with extraterrestrial wildlife, the game’s primary focus is on exploration and experimentation. At around 10-12 hours, Journey to the Savage Planet sounds like a nice palette cleanser for those who need a break from all the 100-hour games released last year.

You can pre-order Journey to the Savage Planet on Amazon.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

Platform: PC
Release date: January 23

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners proves there’s still life left in the once-popular franchise. Since it is a VR title, Saints & Sinners is all about immersing players in the horrifying world of TWD. Beyond the VR element, Saints & Sinners tests players by forcing them to make tough moral decisions that could impact them and the wider world. If you’re still on the fence about VR, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners may convince you of the platform’s viability. Check out my preview to learn more.

You can pre-order The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners on Steam.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

Platform: PC
Release date: January 9

It took a while, but Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is finally coming to PC. This story expansion adds an all-new location called the Hoarfrost Reach. This winter wonderland contains dozens of new monsters to slay, sidequests to complete, and rare armor, weapons, and items to grind for. Like I said in my review, Iceborne puts other expansions to shame. Monster Hunter World on its own is pretty excellent and Iceborne just makes it better. If you’re a Monster Hunter World PC player, you’re in for a treat with Iceborne.

You can pre-order Monster Hunter World: Iceborne on Steam.

Kingdom Hearts III: ReMIND

Platform: PlayStation 4
Release date: January 23

Kingdom Hearts III took a decade and a half to come out. Thankfully, its expansion DLC won’t take nearly as long to release. ReMIND serves to fill the narrative gap that occurred near the game’s climax. This new scenario sees protagonist Sora engaging in challenging battles against foes belonging to Real Organization XIII. Battles aren’t limited to Sora as players can also control fan-favorites like Riku, Aqua, Kairi, and more. Like all Kingdom Hearts add-ons and expansions, I’m sure ReMIND will only serve to muddle the already convoluted story. But I’m sure that’s perfectly fine for the Kingdom Hearts faithful.

You can pre-order Kingdom Hearts III: ReMIND on the PlayStation Store.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: January 17

The Nintendo Switch has no shortage of Wii U ports and JRPGs. You get both with Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore. This port is a crossover between Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem. Turn-based battles happen in modern-day Tokyo and strange alien dimensions called Idolospheres. The original game released during the waning days of the Wii U. Hopefully, this updated edition will find a larger audience on Nintendo Switch.

You can pre-order Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore on Amazon.

Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: January 23

Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD made its way to damn near every console out there so it’s no surprise to see a Switch port. This edition features updated FPS controls and gyroscopic aiming. Other than that, this is the same Stranger’s Wrath we all love and remember. With so many ports, it’s weird that we’ve never seen a Stranger’s Wrath 2 or something to that effect. Then again, EA is kind of weird when it comes to sequels to some of its popular games (where’s Burnout Paradise 2?) so perhaps it’s best to not hold our breath for a follow-up.

You can pre-order Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD on the Nintendo Game Store.

Warcraft III: Reforged

Platform: PC
Release date: January 28

Given the overwhelming popularity of World of Warcraft, it’s sad to see how players have all but forgotten Warcraft III. This will change with the release of Warcraft III: Reforged. As expected, this updated version of the RTS classic boasts updated graphics. Gameplay-wise, things are mostly the same; save for some minor balance changes. The most noteworthy feature is that both the original and Reforged share the same client — thus keeping their respective online communities under one roof. If you’re curious to see Warcraft’s pre-WoW history you should give this one a shot.

You can pre-order Warcraft III: Reforged on the Blizzard Shop.

Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: January 21

Capcom has done a fantastic job of re-releasing its various Mega Man games in recent years. Now, the company is set to drop yet another compilation: the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection. This game is actually an updated port released on the Nintendo DS back in 2010, only with graphics suitable for modern consoles. These games have practically vanished from public consciousness, which makes this a great collection for those who missed out the first time around.

You can pre-order Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection on Amazon.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered

Platform: PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One
Release date: January 23

Final Fantasy VII Remake isn’t the only entry in the long-running series returning in 2020. Originally released on the GameCube, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered sports updated graphics, a new and arranged soundtrack, extra dungeons, and more. Like the original, Crystal Chronicles is a multiplayer-focused affair; meaning users on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One can all play together. Though Final Fantasy VII Remake will overshadow it, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered is an FF game worth playing.

You can pre-order Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered on Amazon.
