Western Digital Teases Whopping 8TB Portable SSD

There was a time when picking a portable storage device required making compromises — capacity for physical size or speed, that sort of thing. Western Digital has proclaimed that those days are over.

The easily pocketable SanDisk drive you see here? It can store a whopping 8TB of data. That’s four times more capacity than the largest Extreme Portable SSD SanDisk currently offers.

The drive also transfers data four times faster than the existing Extreme Portable SSD line-up, maxing out at a blazing 20Gbps.

As for the physical dimensions, Western Digital didn’t mention those in the official press release. The drive appears to be slightly larger than the Extreme Portable models. That certainly doesn’t mean the new model is even remotely bulky: the current drives measure 3.79″ by 1.95″ and are just .35″ thick.

The release also didn’t say when you’d be able to purchase this tiny dynamo. As Engadget points out there aren’t even a lot of 4TB models on the market right now, and the ones that are available can cost upwards of $600.

Then again, with plummeting SSD prices and skyrocketing demand the 8TB SanDisk drive may arrive in the not-too-distant future.

If, on the other hand, you prefer your portable storage in thumb-sized packages, Western Digital has something new launching before the end of this winter.

They’re introducing a new SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe USB Type-C Flash Drive, and it has capacity to match the length of its name. The new drive will let you carry a full terabyte of your files around in its sophisticated aluminum shell.

Like the other models in this range, the 1TB Dual Drive features both USB Type-C and A connectors. Just rotate the cover to expose the port you need and plug it in. These drive don’t come close to the Extreme SSD when it comes to speed, but they still move files at a very respectable 150MB/s — and they fit in that weird little change pocket in your jeans.
