Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick first broke big with the original Zombieland, and they returned for the sequel in theaters now. But arguably the duo’s most beloved work are their scripts for the live-action Deadpool movies, written in close collaboration with star Ryan Reynolds. Fortunately, it seems the screenwriters are still onboard with the franchise even though Disney has now taken the reigns following the Fox buyout. Even better, it sounds like the Mouse will let the Merc keep his R-rated mouth.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wernick said, “Marvel has promised to continue to let us play in the R-rated Deadpool universe, and the hope is that they will also let us veer into the Marvel Cinematic Universe a little bit as well and play in that sandbox.” That seems like a pretty definitive answer as to how Deadpool will interact with the rest of the relatively family friendly Marvel world.
So why do we think Disney is allowing this exception? Why not go the Once Upon a Deadpool route and embrace censored PG-13? I’m sure Kevin Feige will say something about how the MCU is all about being faithful to Marvel characters, and that being true to Deadpool means letting him be as profane as he wants.
But the real answer is money. Ryan Reynolds starring in R-rated live-action versions of Deadpool makes a lot of money. If that wasn’t the case, Disney would surely recast and retool just like they’re doing with the Fox Marvel properties fans have rejected on the big screen like the larger X-Men film series and the Fantastic Four.
Deadpool 3 is still purely hypothetical at this point. But it’s nice to know that when it does happen, and it will happen, it won’t be totally neutered. It’s funny though that Deadpool being in the MCU has caused fewer headaches than Spider-Man. In the meantime, check out these Deadpool toys.
