Move over, Us: The biggest plot twist of the year is the launch of an official Craigslist application in the iOS App Store.
The original online classifieds, Craigslist was established in 1995—13 years before Apple’s digital download emporium opened.
Like the no-frills website it’s based on, the simplistic app features a clean, uncomplicated interface.
Users can boil down searches based on location and type: Scour listings for local jobs and apartments, negotiate with people selling their stuff, find out if you’re someone’s missed connection.
Or, tap into the free app’s ability to post, edit, and renew your own ads.
Available for iPhone and iPad (there’s a beta version for Android owners), the platform has an impressive 4.6-out-of-5 star rating from 84 reviews—which is pretty respectable, considering it only launched on Tuesday.
Not everyone’s thrilled with the long-awaited release, though: “Too little, too late,” one two-star review said, lamenting the platform’s lack of identity verification.
What began as an email distribution list to friends expanded into one of the most infamous advertisement websites in the world.
Twenty-four years ago, feeling isolated as a relative newcomer to San Francisco, Craig Newmark began posting social events to friends and developers living and working in the Bay Area.
Word of mouth and user demand led to the addition of new categories; Newmark eventually registered “craigslist.org,” and the website went live in 1996.
The site now serves more than 50 billion monthly page views and boasts 80 million new ad postings each month, as of 2017.
Like most other social networks, Craigslist hasn’t been without its controversies: claims of promoting prostitution, threatening the business of local alternative newspapers, and trying to shut down a useful service (3Taps).
