Lil Bub, the adorable cat that stole hearts across social media, has died at the age of 8.
The Insta-famous feline passed away on Dec. 1, according to a post uploaded to Instagram by her owner Mike Bridavsky.
“On the morning of Sunday, December 1st 2019 we lost the purest, kindest and most magical living force on our planet,” Bridavsky wrote on Instagram. “BUB was cheerful and full of love laying in our bed with us Saturday night, but unexpectedly passed away peacefully in her sleep.”
According to Bridavsky’s statement, Lil Bub was battling an aggressive bone infection and he wasn’t “expecting her to pass so soon or so abruptly without warning.”
Lil Bub and Bridavsky have been besties since 2011. Over the past few years, the cat became a “celebrity,” accumulating more than 2.3 million followers on Instagram. She was known for her beautiful green eyes, little tongue, and sweet demeanor. In addition to cute photoshoots, Lil Bub also took part in genetic research and helped raise over $700,000 for animals worldwide.
Thousands of Lil Bub fans, including other feline starlets and their owners, responded to the sad news on Instagram.
“Mike and family, this broke my heart into pieces! Words cannot describe how very sad we are for your loss,” Venus the Two Face Cat’s owner wrote. “Bub made this world a better place warming one heart at a time with her sweet face as you did through sharing your incredible bond & journey with her. I’m so grateful Venus & I got to meet her and see her sweet but sassy charm.”
“We are so incredibly sorry for your loss. Bub was such a treasure and so fortunate to have you,” the Best Friends Animal Society commented. “Our thoughts are with you in this incredibly difficult time.”
Even though Lil Bub is no longer with us, her unforgettable presence will live on.
“And even though my heart is absolutely crushed by her graceful departure from planet Earth, I know that her sprit, magic, and overwhelming energy are still with us, reminding us every day to be better, Bridavsky wrote. “I am forever honored and humbled that you chose me as your caretaker. Please visit all of us in our dreams.”
