Netflix is taking the helm of a limited series about how Spotify went from Swedish startup to global sensation.

The untitled program is inspired by nonfiction book Spotify Untold (Spotify Inifrån), a behind-the-scenes exoposé of how founder Daniel Ek and financial partner Martin Lorentzon bet everything on an idea.

A “modern-day David-versus-Goliath” story, the series will be produced by Yellow Bird UK [Spotify’s rise to power dramatized in TV mini-series]. Founded in 2003, the firm’s resume includes The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Millennium Trilogy, and upcoming Netflix original Young Wallander.

And, soon, Spotify Untold.

“The story of how a small band of Swedish tech industry insiders transformed music—how we listen to it and how it’s made—is truly a tale for our time,” according to Yellow Bird executive producer Berna Levin.

“Not only is this a story about the way all our lives have changed in the last decade,” she said in a statement. “It’s about the battle for cultural and financial influence in a globalized, digitized world.”

Central to the series is Spotify’s turbulent journey into the U.S. market, described as a “chess match between the new kids and the old guard”: Steve Jobs, Jimmy Iovine, and Beats Music against Ek, Lorentzon, and Sean Parker (of Napster fame).

Think bilingual The Social Network, but with more music and on the small screen.

“It is an ongoing fairytale in modern history about how Swedish wiz kids changed the music industry forever,” director Per-Olav Sørensen explained, calling the story “truly exciting and challenging.”

“Challenging,” he said, “because the Spotify story has not ended yet—it is still running with high speed and will probably change while we work on the project.”

The series, expected to feature major players in the music and tech industries, will likely need to cast yet another version of real-life characters Steve Jobs (previously portrayed by Ashton Kutcher and Michael Fassbender), Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg), and Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake).

And, if the book’s website is anything to go by, you can also expect fictionalized forms of Ek, Lorentzon, artist Jay-Z (whose TIDAL subscription-based platform competes with Spotify), Tencent CEO “Pony” Ma Huateng, and record producer Iovine.

“The founding tale of Spotify is a great example of how a local story can have a global impact,” Tesha Crawford, director of Netflix international originals for Northern Europe, said. “We are really excited about bringing this success story to life.”
