PlayStation State of Play Has Deadly Zombies, Horrible Geese

To be brutally honest, it’s still kind of shocking to me how a video game platform as massively successful as the PlayStation can present its slate of upcoming games in such a ho-hum way like these State of Play shows. Maybe Nintendo Directs are harder to imitate than we thought. Maybe they’re just biding time for the PlayStation 5.

But whatever, PlayStation has been putting out great games for 25 years. Ken Kutaragi, the father of the PlayStation, even showed up to reminisce. And this State of Play did have some stuff worth getting excited about in the future.

The leak was true. Resident Evil 3 is getting the same lavish remake treatment as Resident Evil 2 earlier this year. Play as Jill Valentine in Raccoon City as the doomed town approaches its zombie-filled destruction. The game releases next April, which made us wonder about the other upcoming Resident Evil game the multiplayer-focused Project Resistance. But it turns out these are just the same game, you get them both with your purchase.

Speaking of horrible monsters, the show opened with the news that Untitled Goose Game, the smash-hit indie animal chaos simulator of the year, is coming to PS4 next week. Other intriguing indie and indie-adjacent games include the “surreal wildlife simulation” Paper Beast for PlayStation VR, the “mind-bending first-person puzzler” Superliminal, and the fantasy battle royale Spellbreak.

As for bigger third party games, we got a new look at the upcoming Predator: Hunting Grounds, PlatinumGames and Square Enix finally showed off gameplay for their next fantasy action collaboration Babylon’s Fall, and somehow Kingdom Hearts 3 has enough story left to tell for a substantial paid DLC pack next month.

There wasn’t much on first-party Sony games (outside of the news that MLB The Show is bringing its baseball sports sim to other platforms) but the ambitious game creation software Dreams got a final release date of next February while Ghost of Tsushima will get a new trailer and this Thursday’s Game Awards.
