One of Microsoft’s boldest plans for reinvigorating the Xbox One generation was basically splitting the hardware in two. These days you can either get the modest Xbox One S (including a cheaper version with no disc drive) or the “most powerful video game console” the Xbox One X. And now a new report from Kotaku claims that split will continue into the next generation with two different versions of Xbox Scarlett.
At least one form of the Xbox Scarlett console is coming next holiday, paid for all at once or in installments. But Kotaku’s sources suggest that ultimately users will be able to choose between two different versions of the console, a high-end version and a more modest version. Each will run the same games just at different levels of performance, and both will still be more powerful than consoles today.
All the wacky codenames involved are likely to disappear once the consoles are fully unveiled. So let’s enjoy them while we can. The more powerful console is codenamed Anaconda while the budget version is Lockhart. Lockhart is also expected to do away with the disc drive. So if Xbox Scarlett does wind up the final name, the Xbox SAD could live on with the Xbox Scarlett All-Digital. This is the most important thing.
Microsoft has already been preparing for a new generation where the raw power of your box doesn’t matter quite as much. With an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription and Project xCloud streaming, a cheaper Xbox could still offer beautiful versions of countless games without users ever paying for a full-price disc.
We still need to see what those games are though. Aside from 2020 launch title Halo: Infinite, Xbox Scarlett games are still a question mark. Recently revealed titles from Rare, Obsidian, and Dontnod are practically a lock for the console, but we don’t know much about those either. Read about what we do know about both upcoming next-gen consoles Xbox Scarlett and PlayStation 5.
