Watchmen just wrapped up its first (and hopefully) only season on HBO and folks seem to dig it! The adaptation continues the heady themes of the original acclaimed DC comic book by adding real-world political concerns to the absurd adventures of superheroes. But you can do that kind of deconstruction using the actual characters, not just stand-ins. A great example is Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar. And whether or not you’ve read the original comic, you can see the story of the communist Kryptonian in a brand new way thanks to the upcoming animated film.
Watch the first trailer for Superman: Red Son!
Superman stands as a champion for 20th century American values. And throughout much of that century America couldn’t stop talking about how those values made them better than the Soviet Union. Superman: Red Son then posits the radical notion of how differently the Cold War might play out if the Man of Tomorrow landed in Siberia instead of Kansas when he arrived on Earth.
The original comic has the patriotic worker Superman interacting with all sorts of reimagined versions of the DC pantheon. Many of them are shown in this trailer. Lex Luthor battles Superman on behalf of the U.S. government. Wonder Woman is an interested diplomat. There’s still a Green Lantern Corps. And somehow Batman’s grumpy loner darkness just works so much better as a drunk cold Russian in a fluffy snow hat. Numerous real-world historical figures also come into play like John F. Kennedy and Joseph Stalin.
Superman: Red Son first released as a comic book in 2003 and later got a motion comic adaptation. But this is a full-blown animated feature including cast members Jason Isaacs, Roger Craig Smith, Vanessa Marshall, Amy Acker, and Diedrich Bader. The film releases in early 2020.
