I’m not going to lie, fam. This year’s Game Awards might have been the most painful yet. And that’s before famous bad game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice took home the top prize. It’s not like the show was chock full of cringeworthy moments or anything. But the fact that this “awards show” is really just hours of wall-to-wall commercials, separated by actual commercials, was more embarrassing and overwhelming than it has ever been.
So many awards were just rattled enough like no one involved actually cared, to make sure there was time for the next commercials that are the real priority. It didn’t help that many of the commercials were for various fantasy things so generic that they practically blurred into each other. I would’ve guessed that the end of the generation meant there were fewer exciting games for tease, but Sony and Microsoft revealed straight-up next-gen console games for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and the show still somehow felt more pointless than ever.
But whatever, Reggie was cool. Marx got a shout out. The goose harassed some Muppets. Folks like Green Day. Telltale Games is somehow back from the dead in a really sketchy way. I’m never going to vape again. Fortnite wants to virtually consume all IP? And even if we didn’t learn the latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character, we did learn about plenty of other cool new games. So save yourself the slog of actually watching The Game Awards and pick and choose which of these trailers to watch.
