Arizona authorities recently killed three mountain lions after they were found devouring human remains near Pima Canyon Trail.
Officials found the human remains during an investigation of the area on Tuesday, CNN reported.
According to a press statement, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Office of the Medical Examiner and the Game and Fish Department, are looking into the incident.
Authorities believe that the mountain lions didn’t kill the victim on the trail, the New York Daily News noted. However, the animals were not afraid when officials tried to remove the human remains.
“Mountain lions are not routinely scavengers. A mountain lion eating human remains is abnormal behavior. Those that do are more likely to attack a human being in the future,” Game & Fish Department Regional Supervisor Raul Vega told KGUN.
He added “In addition, they did so 50 yards from a popular hiking trail and within sight of homes, and repeatedly showed no fear of responding officers. They were a clear and present danger to public safety.”
The victim, who was found on Tuesday, has not been identified at this time. A medical examiner is conducting an autopsy today to determine the cause of death.

The trail, which is in the Tucson vicinity, reopened on New Year’s Day. When visitors were told about the incident, some said it wouldn’t prevent them from enjoying the beautiful scenery.
“The animal activity is nothing new. We see it in the neighborhood all the time,” Tom Goslin, a Foothills resident, told KGUN. “I don’t know of anyone or anyone’s pet that has actually been harmed by it.”
