Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sparked backlash after fans noticed that Rose Tico had minimal screen time in the movie. Kelly Marie Tran didn’t directly address the matter, however, she explained why it was challenging to shoot Leia’s scenes for the film.
Tran spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the difficulties of not having Carrie Fisher present for the production process.
“It’s one thing to sit there, look at that footage, and try to react to it, but a lot of the big group scenes felt like they were puzzle pieces if that makes sense,” Tran told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think there were more reshoots on those scenes, specifically, to just try and make sure all of the performances matched up since she [Carrie Fisher] wasn’t physically there.”
Tran’s comments are in line with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s co-writer Chris Terrio, who discussed why some of Rose Tico’s footage was cut from the movie.
“There were a couple of scenes that we shot with Rose that I wish had made it to the final cut,” Terrio explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “But it’s the nature of the process that certain scenes fall out of the film, and I very much respect the difficulty of the decisions J.J. [Abrams] had to make — especially given that I know for a fact that J.J. [Abrams] adores and respects Kelly [Marie Tran] and would have loved to keep every second he shot with her in the film.”
Star Wars fans are still not happy about Rose Tico though: Some have urged that she receive her own Disney+ series after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Disney, the solution is simple:
Give Rose Tico her own Disney+ show. Eight episodes. New adventure. Love interest. Story fleshed out.
