‘Morbius’ Trailer Is a Blood-Sucking MCU ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off

In theory, there’s a little reason to care about this Morbius movie. Jared Leto, hot off the heels of playing the only modern Joker not nominated for an Oscar, hops over to Marvel to play Dr. Michael Morbius The Living Vampire. Because traditional undead vampires were too occult for comic books at the time. And it seems like the kind of movie studios might have greenlit after the success of Blade 20 years ago.

But this first Morbius trailer does give us a lot to talk about, even if it’s on the fringes of the movie itself. Take a look!

Morbius is traditionally a Spider-Man villain. But Sony already made a movie about Venom, literally a monstrous Spider-Man, that still didn’t feature the famous wall-crawler. The Sony/Marvel shared custody deal was been one of the most tense bits of current comic book movie drama. For a while there it seemed like Spidey’s days of hanging with the Avengers were numbered. But then the studios came to some sort of agreement.

And it appears that agreement also involves this bad-looking movie about a sick doctor with bat powers sort of taking place in Spider-Man’s corner of the MCU. There’s a Spider-Man poster (hilariously a Raimi suit PS4 screenshot) with “murdered” graffiti. So presumably this takes place after Spider-Man: Far From Home. Rumors suggest J.K. Simmons returns as J. Jonah Jameson. But even crazier the trailer confirms Michael Keaton returning as Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Morbius release this July. Tom Holland is totally going to be in Venom 2. Bring on the Spider-Verse.
